One hundred year old former teacher Mrs. Rita Cuffy Desabaye of Pichelin, Dominica was honoured on October 05, 2010 – World Teachers’ Day for her outstanding contribution to education in the commonwealth of Dominica.
Mrs. Desabaye or Teacher Cuffy as she is affectionately called was the proud recipient of a beautifully designed marble plaque from Courts Dominica Ltd. In making the presentation, Human Resource supervisor at Courts Dominica, Mrs. Joanne Guiste said that her company was proud to be associated with this activity and in particular this education icon – Mrs. Desabaye. Mrs. Guiste went on to explain that the contribution of Mrs. Desabaye should not go unnoticed and Courts Dominica was happy to make a presentation to her on World Teachers’ Day
The activity was the ‘brain child” of President of the Dominica Association of Teachers, Mrs. Celia Nicholas. She told the small gathering that Mrs. Desabaye travelled the length and breadth of Dominica providing high quality education to the people of Dominica. “We must give her, her flowers while she is still alive”, the DAT Boss said.
Still very alert and sensitive to her surroundings, Mrs. Desabaye expressed her sincerest gratitude to Courts Dominica Ltd. and the Dominica Association of Teachers for recognizing and honouring her.
Among other persons present at the ceremony were: Rita Desabaye daughter, care taker Mrs. Jonia Xavier, Great Grand Niece- Saujanie George who incidentally was born in the same month and and on the same date as Mrs. Desabaye. Also in attendance was Miss Rosamund Rolle – Trustee – Dominica Association of Teachers.
