When the ‘curtains came down’, on the afternoon of Thursday, May 30, on the 2024 Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) Spelling Competition, two academies; one primary and one secondary captured the top spots.
In the Primary Schools Category, The Lighthouse Christian Academy came first. The Team of Gelana Auguiste and Taliah Darroux maintained their impressive performance from the preliminaries mustering a ninety percent (90%) spelling accuracy to win the Team Competition out of a field of eight schools. St. Mary’s Primary School represented by Omar Grell and Carlisle Harris came in second and Savanne Paille Primary School represented by Jeffon Romain and Kitera Valentine took third place.
In the Secondary Division, It was the team of Kruz Ferreira and Nafsah Francois of the Orion Academy with perfect scores who emerged champions. In second place was the Wesley High School with the Dominica Grammar School placing third.
The 2004 Spelling Bee was sponsored by Macmillan Education Caribbean for the third consecutive year. Support also came from Jays Limited, Josephine Gabriel & Co. Ltd, Issa Trading Ltd, Dominica Broadcasting Corporation (DBS Radio), Kairi FM, EMO News and the Government Information Service (GIS).
